Yagara jundal ngah jah nyah Yagara jarra ngumbi nyah Gilladan nurri dayba.
I am a Yagara woman living on Yagara country. My name is Lakota Moon. My Yagara name is Gilladan, which means ‘Moon’.

Growing up I rarely saw dolls, television characters, or toys that reflected Indigenous Australian culture. Longing for representation, connection, and visibility for young Indigenous children I have created a product of doll and manikin figures which reflects Indigenous culture.

Seeing positive representations of ourselves in society boosts confidence, pride for our individual self as well as pride for our cultural backgrounds which implements a sense of belonging.

Budjarr (old man)

Manikin with Cloak

Created on the traditional lands of the Yagara People, this Budjarr Manikin represents wisdom, cultural knowledge, respect, and the significant roles and responsibilities each member of the community holds.

This piece honours the knowledge keepers, storytellers and teachers who carry culture through generations and continue to strengthen connection to Country.

The possum fur and emu feather cloak represent wisdom, protection, cultural strength, and respect. The materials reflect the importance of cultural representation and the traditional use of materials from the local area as part of ceremony and identity.

The cultural markings across his chest depict hunting boomerangs which is a symbolism of family, gathering, protection, and the continuation of cultural knowledge through generations. The lightning strikes across the whole figure stands for strength, spirit, energy, and the power of the land and sky.

More than a manikin, this piece carries story, respect, and the enduring strength of culture shared down to future generations.

Lakota Moon – Created on Country with love, respect, and cultural connection.
