Walking in Two Worlds Original Artwork
Pastel drawing by Artist Anne Leon - Nhuralama
Walking in Two Worlds
Pastel on paper

This piece speaks to the experience of walking between two worlds — the fast-paced expectations of modern life and the deep, steady rhythm of Country.

The softness of the pastels is intentional. The lighter tones are not an absence, but a presence — a reminder that identity is not defined by how dark or visible something appears on the surface. Culture, connection, and belonging live far deeper than colour.

For many Aboriginal women, this journey is layered. Moving through spaces where we are sometimes seen, sometimes questioned, and sometimes misunderstood — yet always carrying strength, knowledge, and quiet resilience.

The pathways in this piece do not clash; they coexist. They show that walking in two worlds is not about choosing one over the other, but about holding both with balance, respect, and truth.

This work is a reflection of that lived experience — gentle in appearance, but strong in story.

Nhuralama's Shop -Eagle and Red Belly Black” - Created by Wadjuri and Wakka Wakka artist Nathan Kilby.
Eagle and Red Belly Black” by Nathan Kilby

Created by Wadjuri and Wakka Wakka artist Nathan Kilby, born and raised in Tulmur (Ipswich), this powerful artwork tells a deeply personal story of family, ancestry, resilience, and connection to Country. Through symbol and colour, Nathan honours both his mobs and the generations who continue to guide him spiritually and culturally.

The eagle soaring above represents Nathan’s grandfather, a strong hunter, protector, and guiding presence within the family. Eagles are known for their strength, sharp vision, and leadership, symbolising the ability to rise above while remaining deeply connected to Country. The three golden eggs represent Nathan, his brother, and his brother-in-law, carrying the continuation of family, responsibility, and cultural strength forward.

The red belly black snake represents Nathan’s grandmother, embodying protection, wisdom, survival, and transformation. Surrounding the snake are the pink and silver eggs, symbolising Nathan’s sister, mother, and the children of the family. Together they reflect nurturing spirit, family unity, and the continuation of future generations.

Flowing throughout the artwork are rich maroon tones representing the lands each family member was born on and has walked throughout their lives. These colours ground the story in memory, identity, and connection to Country. The purple elements reflect the journeys, struggles, and resilience Nathan’s grandmother and grandfather experienced together, honouring both hardship and enduring strength.

This artwork is a visual story of kinship, spirit, and cultural identity. It reminds us that family connections run deeper than time, and that the guidance of our ancestors continues to walk beside us through every stage of life.
